Title: Fair Labor Standards Act: The basics and what you need to know about the FLSA

Presented by: Elsie Darcy, U.S. Department of Labor – Wage and Hour Division’s Phoenix District Office

Date: November 12, 2026

Time: 12:00 pm

Overview:

This presentation provides an overview of the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

 What the audience will learn:

  • Employment relationships
  • Exempt vs nonexempt employees
  • What are hours worked under the FLSA
  • How to calculate overtime pay
  • Recordkeeping requirements
  • Pumping breastmilk at work provisions
  • Youth employment protections

Under the FLSA, covered nonexempt workers are entitled to a minimum wage for all hours worked and overtime pay after 40 hours of work in a workweek.  The FLSA also contains youth employment standards that are designed to protect the educational opportunities of minors and prohibit their employment in jobs and under conditions detrimental to their health or well-being.  To help employers stay in compliance with the FLSA, this presentation will provide an overview of the main compliance principles of the FLSA.
